Here is the tale that led to this 10 year ban.
Aklilu Kebede Wurga (“Mr Wurga”) caused Haw Private Hire Limited (“Haw”) to apply for a Bounce Back Loan (BBL) of £50,000 on 21 December 2020 using overstated turnover figures in the BBL application form. Consequently, Haw received more monies than it was entitled to from the BBL scheme.
In that:
- Under the BBL scheme businesses could apply for a loan of between £2,000 and £50,000 subject to a maximum of up to 25% of turnover.
- The turnover figure was self-certified by the applicant.
- The turnover figure required was that for the calendar year 2019 or where a business was established after 1 January 2019 it is their estimated turnover.
- Haw was incorporated on 24 May 2019.
- On 21 December 2020 Mr Wurga applied for a BBL of £50,000 on behalf of Haw declaring that its estimated turnover was £225,000.
- Haw submitted dormant accounts to Companies House for YE 31 May 2020, YE 31 May 2021 and 31 May 2022.
- Bank records show between account opening on 28 February 2020 and 21 December 2020 Haw had income of £2,919.
- On 23 December 2020 Haw received the BBL funds of £50,000.
- Haw was not entitled to a BBL.
- It therefore received £50,000 more than it was entitled to under the BBL scheme.
- On 10 March 2023 Haw entered Creditors Voluntary Liquidation with total liabilities of 50,577 of which £50,000 relates to the outstanding BBL.
